Can You Kill Viruses With an Air Purifier?

In a world that’s increasingly focused on avoiding illness, it only makes sense to take a look at a whole-home air purifier from Beckham and Jones. After all, these air purifiers offer three stages of filtration to provide you with clean air to help keep your family as healthy as possible. Given the prevalence of different viruses, it’s important to understand what effect, if any, an air purifier can have on these viruses if they make their way into your Huntsville home.

Killing a Virus

Above all else, it’s important to understand an important fact: viruses can’t be killed. That’s because they’re not alive to begin with. Instead, viruses attach themselves to a host and then replicate until they cause major problems. Ultimately, then, it’s impossible to truly “kill” a virus, even with the best air purifier from Beckham and Jones. At the same time, a virus can be effectively neutralized, a task that an air purifier can take on.

How Does It Work?

Typically, an air purifier from Beckham and Jones uses a three-stage filtration system to take care of multiple types of indoor contaminants, including viruses. It all begins with a HEPA-type filter. These tightly wound filters are designed to capture up to 99.97% of all airborne particles. Although some viruses can make their way through this filter, many of them will be captured. The second stage of an air purifier uses activated charcoal to attract charged particles, and the third stage uses UV lights to sanitize the air.

About Those UV Lights

In most air purifiers, the stage with UV lights is marketed as a germ-fighting stage. While UV light can kill some types of bacteria, it takes a long period of exposure for UV light to render viruses ineffective. Therefore, while this stage will help somewhat in the fight against viruses, the most important stage is actually the HEPA-filtration stage.
