How to Safely Use Your Furnace This Winter

Cold winter air is on the way to Huntsville, TX, which means it’s time to make sure your furnace is safe to operate. Most furnaces use gas as a source of energy. The combustion process creates the heat that warms your home. However, a furnace problem could put your home and health at risk. Employ these tips to safely use your furnace this winter.

Change the Air Filter

A dirty air filter prevents the heated air from entering your living space. When the filter is clogged, the air can’t pass through it. This could cause the heat exchanger to overheat. An overheated heat exchanger may crack, which creates a safety hazard. Once each month, turn your furnace off. Check the air filter and replace it if you see a layer of dust or debris. Don’t wait more than three months between furnace filter replacements.

Check the Pilot

Once each week, check your furnace’s pilot. It should be blue and steady. If the flame flickers or has different colors, the burners could be dirty. There may be an issue with ventilation or the gas supply. These can become serious safety hazards, so it’s best to schedule a furnace inspection if the pilot light is abnormal.

Install and Test a Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Every home with natural gas appliances needs carbon monoxide detectors. Install one outside each bedroom. Make sure there’s one on every level of your home. It’s also a good idea to install one about 10 feet away from the furnace. Test the alarms monthly. Replace their batteries every year.

Be Aware of Potential Hazards

If you smell gas, get out of the house. Don’t flip any light switches or make any calls until you’re outdoors. If you see browning grass, a bubbling puddle, or hear a hissing sound, there’s a possible gas leak. Call for emergency service.
